La
Crosse Technology WS-8010UA Giant Wireless Weather Station with Forecast
and Atomic Clock |
|
|
The
La Crosse Technology WS-8010UA Giant Wireless Weather Station displays
indoor and outdoor temperature plus indoor and outdoor relative humidity.
It also has a weather-forecasting feature with three indicator icons and
two pressure tendency arrows. Outdoor temperature and humidity are transmitted
to the station via the included TX4U remote sensor. The station can actually
receive signals from a total of three remote transmitters, one of which
can be a rain gauge (additional transmitters are optional and sold separately).
The station's incredibly accurate radio-controlled atomic clock has local
and world (hour-offset) time displays and a calendar display, each with
several selectable display modes. |

| Boldly
styled in dark gray and black, the
WS-8010UA is a large, full-featured weather station with atomic
calendar clock. This station has two time displays. One is a
graphic local time display, and the other is a digital display
of either local or hour-offset ("world") time. Also
displayed are calendar information, indoor temperature and humidity,
outdoor temperature and humidity (via an included remote transmitter),
forecasting information, and barometric pressure tendency. Min/max
temperatures and humidity are stored in memory for pushbutton
recall. Install one or two optional remote transmitters, and
get outdoor temperature and humidity data from additional locations.
Install an optional wireless rain gauge, and get rainfall amounts
as well. |

|
|
The
WS-8010UA simultaneously displays indoor and outdoor temperature and humidity.
If you're using more than one remote thermo-hygro transmitter, you will
have to select the desired channel for the outdoor temperature and humidity
display. The station keeps a record of the minimum and maximum indoor
and outdoor temperatures and humidity it has recorded (since the last
memory reset) along with the times and dates of occurrence. These are
available at the push of a button. You can easily reset the temperature
and humidity memory any time you want.
The station's
weather-forecasting feature senses barometric pressure over time and adjusts
the three indicator icons to provide accurate forecasts based on pressure
trends. Also displayed is a pressure trend (up or down) arrow if the pressure
is changing at significant rate.
Not only will
the station operate with up to three remote temperature or temperature-humidity
transmitters, four different transmitters are available. The TX4U (the
one included with the station) reports outdoor temperature and humidity.
The TX3U reports outdoor temperature and has an integral LCD display
for viewing at the installation location. The TX3UP senses temperature
via a probe for use in pools, spas, soil, etc., and has an LCD display
like the TX3U. The TX6U reports outdoor temperature but has no LCD display
of its own.
In addition
to a maximum of three temperature or temperature-humidity transmitters,
the WS-8010UA can operate with a TX5U wireless rain gauge. The TX5U reports
rainfall amounts to the WS-8010UA main unit, which can display total rainfall
up to the TX5U's 99.9-inch maximum and also the rainfall amount for the
last 24 hours. When selected for display, the rainfall amounts appear
in the station's LCD panel where calendar information is normally displayed.
The station's clock calibrates
itself to the world's most accurate clock every night by receiving WWVB
radio transmissions. These transmissions contain time information from
the U.S. atomic clock source, operated by the U.S. Commerce Department
near Boulder, Colorado. The built-in antenna ensures reliable signal reception
up to 2000 miles (3200km) from the WWVB transmitter.
The clock's primary time display
is the graphic time display with an hour arrow and minute dots around
the perimeter of the LCD panel. Four graphic time display options are
available:
-
Flashing hour arrow points
to the current hour of local time, and minute dots line the perimeter
of the LCD panel. Minutes that have passed remain on the screen as
minute dots that do not flash. The current minute dot flashes at the
position that represents the current minute of local time.
-
Flashing hour arrow points
to the current hour of local time. The current minute dot flashes
at the position that represents the current minute of local time.
-
A steady (not flashing)
hour arrow points to the current hour of local time. A steady (not
flashing) minute dot is displayed at the position that represents
the current minute of local time.
-
Flashing hour arrow points
to the current hour of local time. The minute dots start at zero and
count up by fives until they reach the current minute of local time.
Once the current minute has been met, the minute dots disappear and
then begin once again to count up by fives continually repeating the
process.
The clock's world time feature
allows you to set a second, hour-offset time ("world time")
for another time zone. For example, if you live and work in Los Angeles
and your company has an office in Bombay, you can know at a glance what
time it is there. World time is displayed digitally above the middle of
the weather forecast icon between the indoor temperature and indoor humidity.
Actually, this time display has three available modes:
-
World time can be the time
shown constantly.
-
Local time can be the time
shown constantly.
-
World time and local time
can alternate at 5-second intervals. The word TIME always appears
below the time display, and the word WORLD appears above the time
display when world time is being displayed.
The calendar display on the
WS-8010UA has two selectable options (in addition to the rainfall alternatives
mentioned above). These are as follows:
-
Numeric month/date/year.
-
Weekday/month/date, with
the weekday abbreviation in any of 8 selectable languages: English,
French, Italian, Dutch, Danish, Spanish, Japanese, or Italian.
A radio tower and wave icon
in the WS-8010UA's LCD panel indicates WWVB time signal reception, and
a satellite icon indicates signal reception from a selected remote transmitter.
The LCD panel on the WS-8010UA can be set for any of 8 levels of contrast
for optimum viewing.
The WS-8010UA has a dark gray
molded case with a black bezel around the LCD panel. On the bezel are
white hour numbers plus smaller minute/second numbers "on the fives."
The station's case actually curves in and out so that the lower left and
top right corners of the bezel project out from the case while the other
two corners are nearly flush with the case. The curved case not only adds
visual interest, it also allows the three most frequently used control
pushbuttons to be mounted on the lower left side of the bezel, out of
direct sight but really easy to access. The functions of these three buttons
(which the manufacturer calls "keys") are printed on the back
of the case behind the buttons for easy reference. The other two control
pushbuttons are on the back of the station.
The WS-8010UA main unit is powered
by three C (1.5V) alkaline batteries, and the TX4U remote is powered by
two AA (1.5V) alkaline batteries. The batteries are not included and must
be purchased separately. Expected battery life for both the main unit
and the TX4U is approximately 1 year. If you will be using the TX4U remote
in sub-freezing temperatures, we recommend using lithium AA batteries
instead of alkaline. Lithium batteries retain power to about -40°F (-40°C).
With its generous
complement of features and options, the
WS-8010UA weather station is an excellent choice
for serious weather watchers. Whether
you use it in your home or your office, this station's large size and
bold styling will definitely attract attention. As you might expect of
a weather station of this type and size, the WS-8010UA is strictly a wall-mount
unit. The TX4U remote is also wall-mount only.

Radio-Controlled Time:
The NIST (National Institute of Standards
and Technology, Time and Frequency Division) maintains a radio station,
WWVB, in Ft. Collins, Colorado. The WWVB radio station derives its signal
from the NIST atomic clock in Boulder, Colorado. A team of atomic physicists
is continually measuring every second of every day, to an accuracy of
ten billionths of a second per day. These physicists have created an international
standard, measuring a second as 9,192,631,770 vibrations of a Cesium-133
atom in a vacuum.
WWVB (the station’s identification just like
any other radio station) continuously broadcasts time and frequency signals
at 60 kHz. The carrier frequency provides a stable frequency reference
traceable to the national standard. There are no voice announcements on
the station, but a time code is synchronized with the 60 kHz carrier and
is broadcast continuously at a rate of 1 bit per second using pulse width
modulation. The time code contains the year, day of year, hour, minute,
second, and flags that indicate the status
of daylight saving time,
leap years, and leap seconds.
The Integral
Atomic Clock:
The atomic clock integral to the WS8010UA
maintains its incredible accuracy by automatically tuning into the WWVB
radio signal. The built-in antenna ensures reliable signal reception up
to 2000 miles (3200 km) from the WWVB transmitter. As a result, the clock
will calibrate to the atomic clock not only throughout the mainland U.S.
but also in much of Canada. You need only insert the batteries, wait until
the
signal is received, and program the desired additional settings. In locations
outside of WWVB range, the clock can be manually set and will provide
the high degree of accuracy of any quality quartz clock.
In a nutshell, here's how the the atomic
clock works: The clock's antenna is specifically tuned for optimal reception
of the 60 kHz time signal. The time signal received on the antenna is
demodulated by an onboard receiver, which sends the information to the
clock's CMOS microprocessor for decoding. Once your clock has automatically
set its time for the first time, it ensures continuing accuracy by automatically
tuning into the WWVB radio signal between midnight and 6:00 a.m. As long
as your clock is kept within transmitter range, it will continue to display
the absolutely precise time, automatically adjusting for summer time/winter
time changeovers if the daylight saving time option is ON. Should you
move your clock out of transmitter range for an extended period of time,
the clock will continue to operate as a highly accurate quartz-controlled
clock. Upon re-entering the transmitter range, your clock will correct
itself again to the precise WWVB time signal. |
