The
La Crosse Technology WS-2315OAK is a feature-rich, yet
affordable, weather station with real wood trim in an oak
finish. Complete weather data
is available on the compact, backlit LCD display, or the
data can be imported to and displayed on a PC using the
included interface, cable, and software. The La
Crosse Technology WS-2315 weather station is unique in that the outdoor sensors are wired together,
from the wind speed and rainfall sensors back to the
thermo-hygrometer sensor, but the data link from the
thermo-hygro sensor to the base station can be wired or
wireless (your choice). This reduces cost and
complexity of the weather station while improving reliability.

Features:
- WWVB radio controlled ("atomic")
time and date reception and display.
- Display of extensive
weather data, with programmable alarm
functions for certain weather conditions as well as
records of all minimum and maximum values along with
the time and date they were recorded.
- Indoor and outdoor
temperature displays in °F or °C (user-selectable).
- Indoor and outdoor
relative humidity displays.
- Air pressure reading in
inHg (inches of mercury) or hPa (hecto Pascals), absolute or relative
(user-selectable).
- Detailed display of
rainfall data (1 hour, 24 hours, total since last
reset), user-selectable for inches or millimeters.
- Self-emptying rain gauge
sender.
- Wind velocity in mph,
km/h, m/s, knots, or Beaufort (user-selectable)
- Wind direction display
with LCD
- compass as well as numerical (e.g., 225°) and
abbreviated characters (e.g., SW).
- Wind chill factor
display.
- Dew point temperature
display.
- Weather forecast display
by weather icons (sunny, cloudy, rainy).
- Weather (barometric
pressure) tendency
indicator
- Storm warning alarm.
- Large, user-friendly LCD
display of all weather data.
- LED backlight for LCD
display.
- COM port for connection
to your PC.
- Simultaneous display of
all weather data with individual settings by the user.
- All the weather data from the
base station and up to 175 sets of weather history
data with user-adjustable measuring intervals can be
recorded and uploaded to your PC for further processing (e.g., spread sheet, etc.).
The
weather station keeps a record of minimum and maximum data for all
readings, along with the time and date they occurred. These are
available at the push of a button.
Both indoor and
outdoor temperature indications are selectable for either °F or
°C. Wind speed
can be displayed in mph, knots, m/s, km/h, or Beaufort scale.
Barometric pressure can be calibrated for altitude and displayed
in either hPa (hecto Pascals) or inHg (inches of mercury).
The
station's weather-forecasting feature senses barometric pressure
over time and adjusts the indicator icons and tendency arrows to
provide accurate forecasts based on pressure trends.
A
programmable alarm option allows alarms to be set for certain
weather conditions (such as danger of frost, possibility of
storms, unfavorable air pressure and temperature tendencies, and
the like). Up to 13 different alarm types, many with both high and
low alarm thresholds, can be programmed and set.
The included software
requires WindowsTM 98 or above and Pentium 166 MHz or
higher. The PC must have 32M of RAM, 20M of hard drive space, and
a CD-ROM drive to install. The included software can remove stored
data from the Interface and place it in a file on the PC's hard
drive. Selected data can be exported as an ASCII file for use in
other programs (such as Excel). Also, graphs, charts, and data
lists can be generated from the stored data (for example, wind
speed and direction for January 2001).
Compact in size at
approximately 6.3 inches high by 6.1 inches wide, the WS-2315 base
station features real wood accent columns in an oak finish on both
sides of the LCD display panel. The main unit has two foldout legs
for use a freestanding unit on a table, shelf, or desk, or you can
mount the unit on a wall.
All cables use
standard telephone wire and modular connectors. They can be
extended up to an additional 32 feet, depending on the electrical
interference present in the local environment.
The
three remote sensors supplied with the station include a rainfall
sensor, a wind speed and direction sensor, and an outdoor
temperature/humidity sensor. Both the rainfall sensor and the wind
speed and direction sensor are wired to the thermo-hygro sensor
(32-foot replaceable cables provided) to share power and the data
uplink path. The uplink path can be either wireless (up to 100
feet in clear air) or wired via the included 32 foot-cable.
The
sensors are powered by shared batteries in the thermo-hygro
remote, or by power supplied by the base station when operating in
the wired mode. Powering
options are as follows:
- Base station and remotes can be
battery-powered, in which case the base station uses 3 AA
(1.5V) alkaline batteries and the thermo-hygro remote uses 2
AA alkaline batteries.
- Base station can be powered by
the included ac adapter, and remotes can be battery-powered by
2 AA alkaline batteries in the thermo-hygro remote.
- Both base station and remotes
can be powered by the included ac adapter if the data-link
cable is connected from the base station to the thermo-hygro
remote. In this case, you can still install batteries in the
remote for power backup in case of ac power failure.

Note: This unit
has atomic clock functionality. The clock can receive time
broadcasts from the U.S. Atomic clock transmitter in Colorado,
and synchronize itself to the U.S. Atomic clock every night.
As long as the signal is strong where the unit is located, the
clock will maintain accuracy to a fraction of a second, and
reset itself for daylight savings time (unless you choose to
disable the DST function). However, if the clock is
located where the signal is poor, due to metal in the
construction of your building blocking the signal, or due to
electrical interference from nearby electrical appliances or
computers, then the clock may not always receive adequate
signal. Under these conditions, the clock may still
synchronize occasionally when weather conditions are ideal, may
need to be relocated, or may need to be set manually.
